A Tribute to Old Glory – by one of the people we’re fighting for at home while they fight for us abroad
If you’ve served in the military, you’ve heard it read at some point: “My Name Is Old Glory”, read at retirement ceremonies, change of command, and funerals.
Never gave much thought to the origins of the poem, until I saw the video below.
Read by Chief Logistics Specialist (SW/AW) Renold Thomas of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), and posted on the ship’s Facebook page, it’s the best rendition I’ve ever heard. I’ve heard lots over the years.
My Name is Old Glory
by Howard Schnauber
I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world’s tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America’s halls of justice.
I fly majestically over great institutes of learning.
I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world.
Look up! And see me!
I stand for peace – honor – truth and justice.
I stand for freedom
I am confident – I am arrogant
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners
My head is a little higher
My colors a little truer.
I bow to no one.
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped – I am saluted – I am respected
I am revered – I am loved, and I am feared.
I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years:
Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy,
the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines, the rice paddies andjungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal
New Britain, Peleliu, and many more islands.
And a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me.
I was there.
I led my soldiers – I followed them.
I watched over them.
They loved me.
I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima.
I was dirty, battle-worn and tired, but my soldiers cheered me,
and I was proud.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
my country, and when it is by those
with whom I have served in battle – it hurts.
But I shall overcome – for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stand watch over the
uncharted new frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have been a silent witness to all of America’s finest hours.
But my finest hour comes when I am torn into strips to
be used for bandages for my wounded comrades on the field of battle,
When I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers,
And when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving
mother at the graveside of her fallen son.
I am proud.
My name is Old Glory.
Dear God – Long may I wave.
Some people are so damn self-centered, you wonder how they ever get jobs, married, etc…
Then, in steps the Neighborhood Decider of All That Should and Should Not Be:
(Video news story at link, emphasis mine)
A handicap ramp in front of a Fountain family’s house is in the middle of a neighborhood squabble.
Vincent and Heidi Giesegh say their neighbors are threatening legal action if they don’t remove the ramp. They say the next door couple is worried that the ramp will hurt the value of their home. The Giesegh’s say they need it for their 16 year old daughter Kirsten who has Cerebral Palsy.
“As she goes into her spastic modes, we could just tumble down the stairs and both of us could get massively hurt,” said Heidi Giesegh.
The Giesegh’s neighborhood doesn’t have an HOA, and the family says the City of Fountain told them it was ok to install the ramp and widen their driveway for a handicap van. 11 News went next door to get the neighbor’s side of the story and they told us no comment.
“It’s kind of irritating,” said Vincent Giesegh. “I mean we’re trying to do our best to assist our daughter with her daily needs to get in and out of the house.”
The Giesegh’s home is part of a community under construction. We reached out to the home’s builder and they say they’ve also received complaints from the neighbors.
The Giesegh’s say they’ve contacted the Rocky Mountain American Disability Center for help.
Naturally, because they’re despicable jerks, that couple refused to comment. But Vincent Giesegh had something to say. “It’s kind of irritating. I mean we’re trying to do our best to assist our daughter with her daily needs to get in and out of the house.”
Honestly, I think he showed remarkable restraint in that comment. I don’t even wanna THINK about what a scene I’d have made if my next door neighbor threatened legal action over a freaking wheelchair ramp.
The Gieseghs have reached out to the Rocky Mountain American Disability Center for help, and I hope they get a friendly lawyer who will represent them pro bono, because this is just so so wrong.
I hate, HATE HATE having neighbors like this.
Thankfully, today we don’t, but there was a time…

In that, the GOP refuses to listen to the Smart ones
Over the weekend, some of the smartest Smart Girls I know had a summit in Indianapolis, which, one would think, would be an ideal place for the DC Republican party (seemingly desperate to demonstrate the the so-called “WAR ON WOMEN” is a Democrat-conceived hoax that they themselves are guilty of perpetuating) would want to not only attend, but participate in.
Hell no. They didn’t go:
I understand that everyone is busy right now. I also understand that the Hill Republicans have sort of a love-hate relationship with us grassroots warriors. However, I also understand that the Republicans have a woman problem. Whether that is true or not (and I don’t believe it is) the media has won the “war on women” battle and successfully painted Republicans as having a perceived “women” problem. Well if perception is reality you’re screwed, GOP! Time for damage control. What better way to start than addressing a group of grassroots conservative and libertarian women from across the nation as they all sit in one room?
Excuse me, GOP head honchos but these are the very people you are going to be hitting up for money and time in a few months. You are going to expect these women to walk the precincts for you and (wo)man the call centers and stuff the envelopes. You’re going to ask them for $5, $10, just $15 dollars to help so and so defeat the liberal machine! You’re going to expect us to be out there combatting this ridiculous “war on women” meme when it comes up during the election cycle. You’re going to point proudly to organizations like Smart Girl as proof that Republicans have their fingers on the pulse of women’s issues. In other words…YOU’LL NEED US. Yet you could not find the time or decency to come where we were and remind us that you know we’re there and we’re working for victory.
In other words, the GOP establishment types seem to believe in a “shut up, send us money, and we’ll handle this messy political stuff for you.”
Where the local Indiana GOP did make some gestures, the DC swamp sent nobody
The Indiana Republicans were quite gracious, sending a video message from Gov.Mike Pence and bringing in Lt.Gov. Sue Ellspermann to officially open the Summit weekend. Smart Girl founders Stacy Mott and Teri Christoph assert they sent numerous invitations to nearly every GOP heavyweight on the Hill, including RNC representatives. Not one response. Not one representative took the time to even send a prerecorded message.
Next will come the mass mailers with the cards attached for donations.
Send them back blank, and write SGP13 on them. Then give locally, forget the RNC. Despite the party of Bob (Feelya) Filner (D), and Anthony (Whip It Out) Weiner (D), somehow it’s the Republicans who have an image problem, and will continue to without making an effort to reach out to the people who can make or break them for more than just donations.

I heard this a few days ago, I was shocked. I thought I was above being shocked by anything, anymore. Guess I was wrong.
A video clip shows numerous Obama supporters in California signing a petition to repeal the bill of rights in another shocking reminder of how many Americans will mindlessly give up their liberties in the name of supporting the President.
Social commentator Mark Dice invited citizens to sign the petition to “support Obama repealing the bill of rights, taking things further than the Patriot Act” and replacing it with “new NDAA-type legislation.”
Dice labeled the Constitution “old fashioned” and “ancient” in “today’s new world order” as Americans willingly put pen to paper.
“He’s done everything he can to repeal the bill of rights but we’re just showing the citizenry is right behind him repealing the bill of rights,” Dice stressed as signatories nodded in agreement.
People signing the petition still failed to react when Dice repeated that they had “just helped repeal the bill of rights.”
Guess what else, California? It’s going to get worse for our kids. Janet “Big Sis” Napolitano just signed on to head the entire University of California system, as she announced at her DHS resignation today.
“After four plus years of focusing on these challenges, I will be nominated as the next President of the University of California to play a role in educating our nation’s next generation of leaders,” Napolitano said. “I thank President Obama for the chance to serve our nation during this important chapter in our history, and I know the Department of Homeland Security will continue to perform its important duties with the honor and focus that the American public expects.”
Just what we don’t need, another generation of little Eric Holders who think the Bill of Rights we all depend on and many of us swore an oath to protect and defend is “outdated” and “antiquated”.

Paula Deen uses a racial slur years ago – Fired. Alec Baldwain’s homophobic rant THIS WEEK? *crickets*
No consequences for Baldwin as yet…shocked?
See, the way political correctness seems to work is, Paula Deen cooked food the left considers “harmful” to Americans and should be controlled by the state, therefore she should be banned.
Even other cooks who are darlings of the left blast Paula Deen and others for preparing food the we love, and they love to hate because they love it too:
“The worst, most dangerous person to America is clearly Paula Deen. She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she’s proud of the fact that her food is f—ing bad for you. If I were on at seven at night and loved by millions of people at every age, I would think twice before telling an already obese nation that it’s OK to eat food that is killing us. Plus, her food sucks.”

Via Patricia Heaton:
There was no “video protest” as team Obama said repeatedly in multiple places. That was an outright lie, no doubt to protect His Highness B. Hussein Obama and his election chances in November.
Democrats and their willing accomplices in the media pushed a false story then, and are dutifully ignoring the real story now.
The real story – Americans are dead, this administration dropped the ball, and then lied to you, their employer, to save their own jobs.
Now, today at the Congressional hearings, Democrats still want to obfuscate and tell you it’s nothing but politics:
@erickbrockway: Via @SooperMexican GOP is at a hearing investigating Al-Qaeda attacks on #benghazi, Dems are at same hearing investigating attacks on Obama.

This is Colorado, but it could be anywhere (“Pass the bill to see what’s in it“?):
This would be the same Colorado Democrat, Evie Hudak, who *bungled stats and dissed a rape victim.
So yeah, don’t read the pesky words, just flip a coin. Head it passes, tails it doesn’t. And we the people who elected these idiots lose.
*She pulled them from her thinking region, the one she sits on.
UPDATE: Twitchy has more reaction from the Twitter world.
UPDATE II: OMG, it’s only a billion dollars…
While lawmakers debated a bill that would overhaul the way education is funded in Colorado and result in $1 billion in new taxes, state Sen. Evie Hudak (D-Westmister) suggested that they “finish it up real fast in two minutes” without thoroughly discussing a proposed amendment. She also told Sen. Owen Hill (R-Colorado Springs) to “flip a coin” when he asked how he could possibly vote on a major amendment he hadn’t read.
“I’m going to take a quick straw poll,” Hudak said. “How many want to finish it up real fast in two minutes, raise your hand.”
“How can I vote on it if we can’t have a little more discussion on it,” Hill replied.
“Take your best shot,” Hudak shot back.
When the roll was called, Hill again stated that he couldn’t vote on something that the legislature hadn’t read and discussed more thoroughly.
“Here’s a coin you can flip,” Hudak said.
“I didn’t knock on 20,000 doors to flip a coin,” Hill added.
“You’ll pass for now, here’s a coin if you want to flip it,” she said condescendingly.
“Unbelievable,” a stunned Hill muttered.
“The 2012 cycle is Senator Hudak’s last election, as she is term limited and will not have to stand for reelection. She is certainly acting like it,” Revealing Politics notes.
This past weekend while on a 10-mile hike with my 15-year old son to complete requirements for his eagle scout rank, I was illegally detained, stripped of my weapons, and arrested when I refused to voluntarily surrender them. I am a licensed CHL holder in multiple states, an active duty Master Sergeant and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. My only charge was “resisting arrest” though I was never placed under arrest until I was charged with resisting it. Confused? Me too. We were hiking down back country roads away from homes and businesses outside Temple, Texas, when the police claim they were responding to a call about a man walking down the road with a gun, something that is legal in the state of Texas. Luckily, my son was able to get the entire ordeal on video, which my attorney doesn’t want released yet. Can you please share this link as far and wide as possible of an appeal for funds to help us fight this injustice and violation of 2nd and 4th amendment rights? Unfortunately, we had to come up with $2500 bail because the resisting arrest is a class a misdemeanor in Texas and we didn’t want to deal with the headaches that come with using a bail bondsman. I would be greatly appreciative. I have a top secret security clearance and if I don’t fight these charges I lose my clearance, my job, and any any chance of an army retirement after serving 19 years. If you have any questions, please let know. Here is the link: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/2nd-amendment-legal-defense-fund
The Facebook link take you to this page for the Second Amendment Legal Defense Fund, where his lawyer can be contacted for information. My emphasis below:
No one should have to fear being illegally disarmed without warrant, especially someone who has never committed a crime in his life. There is an overt attempt to disarm Americans, and especially veterans, in this country.
I live on a military salary and my wife had to use our savings to bail me out of jail so I didn’t have to spend an entire weekend waiting on the magistrate to enjoy his/hers. So, I need help fighting for my rights. I can’t afford the $10,000 retainer to hire a good lawyer familiar with these issues.
My attorney is Mr. Kurt Glass, an attorney at law and fellow US Army veteran. If you’d like to contact him directly, his email is email@example.com to verify the specifics of my case. His website is www.kurtwglasslaw.com.
